Featured Additions: De Re Militari

Many additions to the Culture: Military section of the ORB Encyclopedia, De Re Militari, ed. Peter Konieczny.  These include:

  • Three portions from The History of William the Marshal, recently translated by Stewart Gregory, and soon to be published by the Anglo-Norman Text Society. The sections deal with a tournament at Lagny sur Marne, an attack on Le Mans by Philip Augustus and Richard, and the Battle of Lincoln in 1217.
  • Other recent primary texts added include accounts of civil war in 15th century Perugia and 11th century Orkney, and the Battle of Hattin.
  • "Pagan Peverel: An Anglo-Norman Crusader", by Susan Edginton
  • "The Infamous Svjatoslav: Master of Duplicity in War and Peace?", by Walter Hanak
  • A preview of Glyn S. Burgess' translation of The Roman de Rou, by Wace: posted the section dealing with the war in Normandy between Henry I and Robert Curthose (lines 10839 - 11418)
  • Links to the fulltexts of the Chronicle of Novgorod and the Art of War by Machiavelli.
  • Storey, Randall, "The Tower of London and the garderobae armorum" - from Royal Armouries Yearbook v.3 (1998)
  • Onon, Urgunge, "The Art of War under Chinggis Qahan" - from The Secret History of the Mongols: The Life and Times of Chinggis Khan (2001)
  • Oikonomides, Nicolas, "The Turks in Europe (1305-13) and the Serbs in Asia Minor (1313) - from The Ottoman Emirate: 1300-1389 (1993)"
